Valentine Day Gift : Celebrate This Valentines Day

The holiday is traditionally observed on the 14th of February each year and some say its origins can be traced back to the Roman Empire.

It is said that the Emperor Claudius II was caught up in several very gory and hated wars. Not surprisingly he found it difficult to get men to fight for him because they had no desire to leave their wives and families. As a consequence of this Emperor Claudius II banned all engagements and marriages so that the men would be free to fight for him. Legend has it that Valentine secretly married couples and when his rebelliousness was discovered he was viciously beaten and killed on 14 February in around 270 AD. After his death he was named as a Saint.

A further legend says that Valentine was killed because he helped Christians escape from Roman prisons. Before his death he fell in love with a jailor’s daughter who used to visit him whilst he was locked up. Before his death he wrote her a farewell letter and signed it “From your Valentine”. This phrase has become fashionable on Valentine greetings and messages today.

The celebration of Valentine’s Day has grown in popularity and today it is one of the most popular holidays of the year. Gifts and cards are sent to loved ones and special people all over the country and indeed the world.

The Internet has made it easier to find gifts and cards which are appropriate and can be sent immediately. With a click of the mouse greetings can be sent which will show the recipient how much they are loved and cared for wherever they are in the World, this is particularly poignant when lovers and sweethearts are separated by work and other commitments, for example in the forces. To receive a special Valentine’s Day gift from a special person is one of the most splendid feelings in the world.
